The name of this natural stone comes from the Latin ‘malum granatum’, meaning ‘grain fruit’, because of its resemblance to the colour of pomegranate seeds.
For many civilisations, Garnet has played a very important role, particularly in mystical terms. Numerous religious texts refer to it. In ancient times, particularly among the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians, it was used to engrave agates, jasper and ivory.
In lithotherapy, this blood-red mineral is considered a bloodstone, toning the heart and kidneys.
The largest deposits are found in Austria, Afghanistan, Brazil, India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and the Czech Republic.
