Chrysocolla has been known since antiquity. It was described by Theophrastus in 315 BC.
It was not until the 19th century that South Americans used chrysocolla to make small objets d'art and jewellery, particularly gold jewellery, which they inlaid with chrysocolla. This stone symbolises the power of water and communication with the forces of nature.
Today, this fine stone, formerly known as semi-precious, is highly prized for its magnificent colours - sometimes brown, sometimes blue-green. It is also widely used in lithotherapy for its physical and emotional benefits.
Chrysocolla is formed when water rich in silica flows over veins of copper.
The main countries that produce chrysocolla are the UNITED STATES, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Russia and the Congo.
