Fire opal is a precious stone belonging to the opal family. It is composed of hydrated silica and can contain up to 20% water by weight. It is this water that gives fire opal its shimmering lustre.
Fire Opal is native to Mexico and is very much a part of Mexican civilisation, both in legends and in books. Historically, this stone was used by the Aztecs long before the Spanish discovered and used it.
Although fire opal is mainly mined in Mexico, it can also be found in Brazil, Ethiopia, Mali, Tanzania and sometimes Australia.
