THE SNAKE AND ITS KNOT PM

THE SNAKE AND ITS KNOT PM

FIGURINE FOR 2025

YEAR OF THE SNAKE

MATERIAL : Paper

SIZE : H. 14 x W. 10 x D. 12 cm

To bring the hariko figurines to life, artisans use wet washi paper, which they gently tap onto wooden molds. Then, a bit of glue is applied. Once the paper is dry, an incision is made to extract the shape from the wood. To decorate it, the figurine is coated with nikawa, an adhesive obtained by boiling natural products. The artisan applies a layer of gofun, a preparation made from crushed shells, which gives it its immaculate whiteness. The final touch: a hand-painted colorful motif by the artisan. To make the figurine stronger, multiple layers of washi paper are layered on top of each other.
Thanks to the multiple layers of washi paper used, hariko figurines are highly malleable, allowing artisans to shape them into elegant forms.
